Chef Penny Davidi’s Cookbook It’s My Thyme: Chef Penny Davidi has always been about breaking boundaries. From being the first Middle Eastern Jewish woman on the Food Network in 2011, to opening two restaurants with a Real Housewife, the chef takes on every one of her goals with passion and love.
Most recently, she has published her own Middle Eastern cookbook, It’s My Thyme, stuffed full of family Persian recipes her family had been eating for generations.
All the recipes in It’s My Thyme have a special meaning to Chef Penny, especially the traditional Persian-Jewish meals that the family ate around the Friday night dinner table. The Jewish tradition of observing Shabbat- the Sabbath- means that the family gathers all together on Friday nights to eat a special meal all together. The Gondhi soup is a Persian-Jewish meal that to Chef Penny, always meant “end of the week, family time, dad coming home early, cousins gathered around the table. As I became a parent and my kids lived on their own… this soup meant everyone was coming home.”
Growing up in a Persian household, her mother and grandmother made sure to instill in Chef Penny a love for family expressed through cooking food, no matter how tough the environment was. Through the Iranian Revolution, all the way to sunny California, the women of the household always made sure the family was well-fed. From stews, snacks, and everything in between, love was always shared around the table. Every recipe in It’s My Thyme has a backstory of family and heart embedded in it, and Chef Penny wants to share the love she felt through her family’s food to your kitchen when you make one of her recipes.
