Family friendly fitness : As a fitness professional you’ll be aware of how competitive attracting and retaining new clients can be. In fact if you have been instructing for even a short amount of time you will most likely have heard a wide variety of excuses for client’s excuses cancelling classes from sickness, to being stuck at work to having their car break down.
But there is one consistent barrier to exercise that many people face – their family! Of course parents will want to spend time with their children and be there for them when they need to, but if like many parents it’s a matter of logistics, be a point of difference and find ways to provide family friendly options to suit your clients. Read below for our tips to welcome families into your fitness facility.

Crèche/Childminding
Short of completing a childcare course yourself in Geelong, Melbourne or where ever you’re based, you may need to outsource this one. The most common way for gyms to offer childminding services is to provide a user paid crèche for certain sessions. Popular time slots will often be just after school drop offs, say 9.30am or early afternoon. However, there is increasing demand for after school classes, especially amongst working parents.
Offering the ability for parents to have their children nearby but wholly supervised will allow them to focus and get the most out of their workout. You might even consider offering an open age kids dance or playtime so the little ones can also burn off their energy before dinner.
Family sessions
Certain types of fitness can lend themselves to ‘audience participation.’ Boot-camp or circuit style classes for example work well for parents that have children who will also be in the room with them as they can easily check in with their charges. Many children will love having a go themselves so be sure to provide some child friendly equipment such as smaller weights and low steps so they too can get a bit of a workout. The first few sessions for a newcomer can be more challenging, but provided that the children are sufficiently engaged and allowed to explore, most begin to look forward to their ‘workout.’
If you are planning on having younger children in your space, ensure parents are aware of their duty to supervise their child and do your best to make the environment as safe as possible for these sessions. It may mean using less or more simple equipment and props.
Baby workouts
Many new mums returning to fitness will simply not be able, or want to leave their babies. Therefore, allowing mums to bring their little along to class can be a great way to boost your client base.
It is advised to keep these sessions in a casual capacity or reasonably allow class substitution should mothers be unable to attend because they’ve been up all night with their little one. By removing barriers to participation not only will you retain clients but mums will quickly spread the word!
