Wanting to go through the process of piercing your ears from home, or yourself is something that only you can decide to do, but it is important to do all of the proper research, know the risks, and have all of the disinfectants and equipment ready at hand when following through with the piercing. Lastly, if you have someone available to assist your or to stand by, it is highly recommended that you do not do this alone.
Get all of the materials ready that you will be using
And just as with anyone else, you want to do this as painlessly as possible. Ice packs will not help with the pain prior piercing. What this does is add texture and abrasions to the skin making the piercing harder. There will already be a tough exterior and on the inside extra fatty tissue that will need to be punctured. Ice will not help with the pain. Purchase a skin numbing gel in the place of ice packs. If you do not have skin numbing gel, tooth pain gels, or gum number alone will help as well.
Do NOT under any circumstances EVER share a needle with another person
Regardless of how good of friends you may be, or whether you’re related or not, do NOT under any circumstances EVER share a needle with another person. This is something that can be avoided with common sense. You will want to clean the needle with disinfectant and use a hot flame to burn the tips or any surface that will be puncturing the skin.
Wash your hands
Once the needle is ready, it will be advised for you and your assistant to wash your hands and sterilize them to the best of your ability, as well as the earrings that you will be placing in your ears after the needle has pierced its way through the skin. Any foam or spray disinfectant that can be applied to the earlobe (after the numbing gel) would be advised a well.
Place potato behind your earlobe
Take the potato and after it has been washed place it behind your earlobe. This is to protect your neck and help with the force from the piercing. If you have someone available to help you, they can pierce while you hold the potato or Nerf ball. You want something solid but easy to hold.
Slowly slide the piercing needle
Slowly slide the piercing needle smoothly through the earlobe until it is all the way through. Here you will want to wiggle the needle, taking it at a slight angle. Once the needle is through, here you will take one large ice cube and hold it in place of the potato for roughly 5 minutes. This will help with the pain at this point as well. Once the 5 minutes has passed thread the earring into the whole while pulling the piercing needle out.
This is one method that is used to pierce your ears with as little pain as possibly. Of course, you are piercing a foreign object into your skin; there will be some discomfort and pain regardless of the technique or method. Be sure to be safe, smart and use common sense. It will be wise to leave the earrings in for 6 weeks, turning them daily and cleaning them 2-3x a day with an astringent or other disinfectant to avoid infection.
