Reasons That Reduce Fertility In Both Men And Women?
What is the greatest gift of nature?
Flowers? Serene sunsets? Breathtaking landscapes or the beautiful thing that life itself is?
Throughout history, in each and every religion or culture that ever existed on earth, one of the most wonderful things that were considered to be the ultimate answer was- ‘children.’ Creating life is the greatest duty mother nature has bestowed upon us.
And it doesn’t feel right when that very special ability of ours gets slowly snatched away by some unknown force. Keep reading because we’re gonna find a solution.
What exactly is fertility?
To put it simply, fertility is the ability to conceive a child. It is an important demographic marker for population growth, and it has vital effects on economic and social development too.
In social science and public health, the population’s fertility is measured by predefined rates.
The fertility rate is defined as the total number of children that would be born to each woman if she were to live to the end of her child-bearing years ( age 15-49 y) and give birth to children ( OECD, 2017).
Infertility: Truth or Gimmick
Declining fertility rates are beyond those conspiracy theories now. According to the Lancet survey, since 1950, the total fertility rate (considered the main driving factor behind population growth) has been set on a steady fall, and it’s almost reached 50% in the past. And blaming no one, this decline is affecting both men and women equally.
This might sound good for stopping population explosion, but what about the new generation? With fewer and fewer children born every year, soon, in decades to come, there will be only mature and older people. To maintain the demography, a population must have a total fertility rate of around 2.1 because no society can progress without young blood.
Why is fertility reduced?
- Changed Social dynamics
Gender roles are changing fast. Women are not meant for household work and raising babies anymore. Women empowerment has established equal opportunity and workflow for them as well in various sectors. This has led to postponed pregnancy, abortions, and even no children policy amongst working women and their male partners as well. - Chronic health issues
Undeniably, chronic health problems like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiac diseases are nowadays getting increasingly common in the comparatively young population. Moreover, busy, stressful lifestyles, spoiled sleep cycles, anxiety, depression, etc., have negative effects on fertility as well. - Accessible contraceptives and family planning program
To prevent a population explosion, family planning programs were initiated, and contraceptives were made widely available to the public. But this has a downside too. Overuse of these has been causing low fertility and birth rates throughout the globe.
The way out: towards a better society
- IVF: IVF or in vitro fertilization is a gem of an invention. In this advanced intervention, sperm and ova are collected separately from both parents. Then the fertilization process of the ovum is carried out in a petri dish under a controlled laboratory environment, and an embryo is conceived. Later, the newly formed embryo is implanted in the uterus by a gynecologist. Medical marvel, right? And with more than a 70% success rate. IVF can be the best-trusted friend to infertile couples.
- Artificial Insemination: Another advancement in associated reproductive technology. In Artificial Insemination, semen is collected from the male partner and artificially planted deep into the fallopian tube ampulla, i.e., the natural meet-up place for sperm and ova. This is extremely helpful for females with some uterine immotility disease and males suffering from less semen production.
- Surrogacy: A legal, assisted method to feel motherhood where another woman (surrogate mother) provides you with her womb and body care to support your IVF-made embryo.
- Adoption: You can legally adopt children from orphanages, foster systems, and juvenile homes and give them a great opportunity to live with a good supportive family. Blood relation is not everything, but love is! Right?
Every problem has its solution for sure. We just need to look closely. Hope you’ve got your solution too.
Enjoy life. Love yourself. Best wishes to your new family.
