Common Health Issues That Most People Are Not Aware of & How to Treat Them : There are countless health issues that affect people all over the world, and many are more well-known than others. There are several other health issues that are actually more common than people think, and some that many people may not even be aware of.
The thyroid gland is located at the base of the neck, and it is responsible for making the hormones that regulate metabolism and the development of the human body. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of those hormones (as opposed to hyperthyroidism, in which too much of the hormones are produced). Hypothyroidism can lead to obesity, heart disease, joint pain, and even infertility. Symptoms include:
- Weight gain
- Puffy face
- Muscle/joint weakness, aches, stiffness, and tenderness
- Thinning hair
- Memory issues
- Enlarged thyroid gland
Thyroid problems can be caused by a poor diet, so proper nutrition can help alleviate some of these issues caused by hypothyroidism. A gluten-free diet can be a starting point for many hypothyroidism sufferers, as they also tend to have celiac disease (sensitivity to gluten). Also, a diet high in selenium (tuna and turkey), vitamin B12 (tuna, eggs, cheese, asparagus, beans, and sesame seeds), and probiotics (kombucha, kefir, and yogurt) can all be helpful when suffering from hypothyroidism.
This is actually a necessary response by white blood cells to protect our bodies from infection. But sometimes this necessary swelling happens with no cause or reason, and this is when problems occur. Chronic inflammation can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and a number of other serious health problems. Common symptoms of inflammation are:
- Joint pain/stiffness/swelling
- Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache, fatigue)
A healthy diet is one of the best ways to combat inflammation. Try to eat a diet high in omega 3 fatty acids (tuna, salmon) and herbs (ginger, turmeric). The popular Mediterranean-style diet is also known to help reduce inflammation. This diet features foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts/seeds, and fatty fish.
Many people are aware that stress is bad, but not everyone realizes how bad it is for your health. Stress affects your mental health (anxiety, depression), but it also affects your physical health (headaches and high blood pressure) because it is both a mental and physical reaction to life. Stress can also impair your ability to get a good night’s sleep (which also can lead to health problems), and when you’re stressed you are more likely to make poorer decisions when it comes to diet (poor eating, overeating, undereating).
Yoga is a good way to reduce stress levels because it focuses on deep breathing techniques, and it is also a form of exercise. Practicing yoga can help you release the physical tension you’re holding in your body and it also helps to clear your mind.
Tinnitus is the sensation of a ringing sound in one or both ears. It is most common in the elderly, those who have had ear infections, those who have had head or neck injuries, and more recently, U.S. service members who used earplugs deemed defective between the years of 2003 and 2012. Common symptoms of tinnitus include:
Some people aren’t bothered by any of these sounds in their ear(s), but there are things that can be done to cope with the sounds. One way to cope is to try to avoid anything that may trigger noises in your ears. White noise and/or soft music can also help to alleviate the noise. It is also helpful to relax, reduce stress, and get a good night’s sleep.
