How To Never Wear Eyeglasses Or Contacts Again

How To Never Wear Eyeglasses Or Contacts Again : Simply never put on your eyeglasses or contacts. Jokes aside, for those of you would like to never wear your eyeglasses or contacts again, we got in touch with a surgeon from LASIK Salt Lake City, to learn more about the procedure.

LASIK eye surgery can help you correct certain kinds of vision problems and completely eliminate your need for eyeglasses and contacts. LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ Keratomileusis and is a kind of laser refractive surgery. There are many kinds of such laser refractive surgeries but we won’t go into the details here. All that matters is that LASIK is the most popular and also the most commonly performed one.

The LASIK procedure involves using a cutting laser to reshape the cornea in order to improve vision. The cornea is a dome-shaped layer of transparent tissue that sits on the surface of your eye. If the cornea is badly shaped, it will bend light entering the eye incorrectly and give it a bad focus so that it doesn’t hit the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye (retina) correctly. That’s what LASIK is for: it reshapes the cornea so that it bends light correctly.

What does LASIK treat?

LASIK isn’t for all kinds of vision problems. It is only the best option if you have any of the below issues:

  • Myopia – Myopia, or nearsightedness, is caused when the cornea curves too sharply or when your eyeball is too long so that light rays entering the eye focus at a point in front of the retina. This makes it hard to see objects that are far away clearly.
  • Hyperopia – Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is caused when the cornea is too flat or the eyeball is too short so that light rays entering the eye focus at a point behind the retina. This makes it hard to see the nearby object.
  • Astigmatism – Astigmatism is a hybrid of myopia and hyperopia. It is caused when the cornea is unevenly curved so that it is difficult to focus on both nearby and faraway object.

If you have any of the above conditions then you probably wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. In that case, you should talk to your eye doctor about the possibility of having LASIK surgery.

Is it worth the Risk?

This is another important question you should ask before you consider having LASIK surgery. Some of the potential risks include the following:

  • Dry eyes usually goes away in a few weeks to a few months
  • Halos, glare, or double vision – Usually goes away in a few weeks to a few months
  • Undercorrections – This happens when the laser cuts away too little tissue and is common for people with myopia. You may need a second LASIK procedure after a while to remove more tissue.
  • Overcorrections – This happens when the laser removes too much tissue from the eye. These are much rarer and are more difficult to fix than Undercorrections.
  • Astigmatism – This is caused by uneven tissue removal. You may need glasses or contacts. It is very rare

Most of the risks above are very rare and typically go away after a while. Before electing for a LASIK procedure, you are advised to consult your ophthalmologist to determine if you are eligible for the procedure.
