6 Foods That Nourish Your Thyroid Health : Unexplained weight gain, poor skin condition, excessive fatigue, and disability can be due to poor thyroid function. These symptoms may also indicate some other diseases, but if an ultrasound scan and a blood test still indicate a thyroid problem, you need to start treatment.

Not many women know, but most of their health problems can be due to poor thyroid health. However, in this article, we help you learn which foods and drinks are harmful to the thyroid and which ones are healthy.

Foods To Avoid:

  • Soy Products: According to doctors, patients with hypothyroidism should cut-off the use of soy products. It can cause harm their health badly. Moreover, such people should be very cautious about what they are eating and in what quantity.
  • Alcohol And Drugs: These harmful products interfere with the functioning of the thyroid. Moreover, if people take these products during hypothyroidism, it will worsen the condition. You will have to help yourself from drug abuse, or its consequences can worsen thyroid health.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables: If you have a thyroid problem, you should not eat cabbage, kale, and spinach. These vegetables, though, are healthy, but they can suppress the effect of medication for hypothyroidism.

Foods To Eat

For improving and supporting thyroid function, you have to eat healthy food items. We are not suggesting that you should follow an ABC diet plan, but make sure you include the following foods in your diet.

  1. Porridge

An essential role in the thyroid gland’s normalization is played by porridge made from buckwheat, oatmeal, and barley. Each of the cereals has its own set of trace elements, but it is especially important for the thyroid gland that they are a source of B vitamins.

  2. Berries And Fruits

Fresh fruits and berries contain antioxidants that protect all cells of the body from oxidative processes. This helps to eliminate inflammation in the thyroid gland, normalize its work, and reduce the likelihood of hormonal disruption.

Apples, cherries, pears, blueberries, oranges, and strawberries are especially useful for the thyroid gland. Eat apples with seeds since they contain up to 15% of the daily iodine requirement.

  3. Seafood And Fish

Sea fish and cabbage, squid, shrimp, and mussels are excellent sources of iodine and omega-3 for the body. However, you need to cook seafood as quickly as possible, and it is better to bake the fish since with prolonged cooking or frying, iodine gets rapidly destroyed.

It is advisable to give preference to seaweed. This is great for the functioning of the thyroid. Only 70 g of the product contains the daily rate of iodine. But avoid eating cabbage. Though it lowers the level of bad cholesterol and thins the blood, it is not beneficial for people having hypothyroidism.

Doctors recommend “feeding” the thyroid gland in the evening, so a portion of seaweed or a piece of stewed redfish for dinner will help it recover in a day.

  4. Vegetables

Every day, to improve overall health and stable thyroid function, you need to eat at least 500 g of vegetables. Give preference to fruits with a high content of antioxidants – tomatoes, bell peppers, radishes, and carrots, that is, those that have a bright color.

It is also worth keeping in mind that it is with hypothyroidism that patients should limit the consumption of white cabbage and cauliflower, as well as broccoli and spinach, as much as possible.

  5. Vegetable Oils

For the thyroid gland to work correctly, you need to add mainly organic and essential vegetable oils to your food and limit the butter to 20 g per day.

The most useful thyroid oils are:

    • Linseed. It contains about 60% omega-3, 20% omega-6, 10% omega-9. You cannot fry in this oil, but it is perfect for dressing salads and ready-made dishes. You can also drink it 30 minutes before the main meal. 1 tsp. for two weeks. Then take a break for one month and repeat the course again.
    • Sesame. It contains antioxidants as well as calcium, iron, omega-6, and omega-3 fatty acids. It is also forbidden to fry in it, but in salads and ready-made dishes, it will bring maximum benefit. Consider its nutty flavor before adding it to food. 2-3 tsp. is enough for an adult a day.
    • Coconut. It contains arachidonic, linolenic, palmitic, and caprylic acids, as well as calcium, phosphorus, and antioxidants. This oil is beneficial only for thyroid hypothyroidism in a volume equal to 2 tbsp. You can have it with breakfast and also with dinner.
  6. Nuts

Most types of nuts contain iodine, so they are very useful for the thyroid gland. But keep in mind that this is an excessively high-calorie food, and you should limit it to 30 g per day. Also, you need to be careful with nuts if there is a tendency to form kidney stones.

The most beneficial for the thyroid gland:

    • Walnuts: They contain acids necessary for the synthesis of tyrosine and phenylalanine – precursors of thyroid hormones. They also have a lot of essential omega-3 fatty acids and easily digestible iodine.
    • Brazil Nuts – They contain not only iodine but also selenium, which together can prevent the development of severe hypothyroidism. These nuts also contain methionine, which contributes to the fullest assimilation of copper, manganese, and magnesium in their composition.
    • Nutmeg: These are beneficial for goiter, subacute and autoimmune thyroiditis to reduce the size of the gland and existing inflammation. One pinch of grated nut is enough per day.

Poor thyroid health can cause several other problems in the body, the most common of which is gaining excessive weight. The occurrence of hypothyroidism is not common. But if it happens, you can cure it. All you have to do is to take proper medication, avoid certain food items, and the eating more thyroid-friendly foods. Stay Happy!
