Gallstones Diagnosis & Treatments: Dissolve Gallbladder. The stones in the gallbladder are caused by the progressive deposit of solid materials such as cholesterol or proteins in the gallbladder or bile duct. Gallstones are the most frequent and dangerous ailment of the gallbladder and bile duct.
Almost all diseases of the bile ducts are related to the appearance of stones in your drainage system. In Western industrialized countries, between 10 and 15% of adults suffer from this disease, although only 25% of those affected manifest symptoms. This pathology is more frequent in women than in men. Among the risk factors are, mainly, obesity and high albumin levels.
Types of gallstones
Gallstones usually appear due to some metabolic alteration of bilirubin, cholesterol or some bile acid. Gallstones can be differentiated into three types according to their composition:
Cholesterol: cholesterol forms cholesterol stones by more than 70%. In industrialized countries, they are the most frequent type of biliary lithiasis (around 70%). These stones are yellow and can be as big as a cherry bone. Its appearance is related to food.
Pigment stones: about 20% of the stones are composed of calcium salts of bile pigments and bilirubin. Its core usually contains cholesterol, in which bile pigments (bilirubin) are deposited in the form of calcium bilirubinate.
Mixed stones: both cholesterol and pigment stones can become calcified during inflammatory processes. The result is a mixture of cholesterol, pigments, and calcium. The mixed stones are composed of the sum of cholesterol, bile pigments, and calcium.
Symptoms
75% of the patients, gallstones are asymptomatic. Discomforts that may appear are usually not specific. Above all, after copious and very fatty meals, pain manifests in the right region of the epigastrium, often accompanied by feelings of satiety, gas, and nausea. When it is a slight irritation of the gallbladder, discomfort is usually similar to the one of gastritis so that they can be confused.
In this case, the muscles of the bile duct wall contract in order to continue transporting the stone. Due to the increase in pressure in the bile duct, there is a pain, characterized by violent cramps, especially in the right region of the epigastrium, which are then felt in the back and the right shoulder and which the patient usually describes as unbearable. The pain is usually intermittent, with very painful periods and periods of less pain. Biliary colic may last very intense for more than 30 minutes and may last up to five hours, accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
Treatment
The usual treatment for stones in the gallbladder is to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). The treatment of choice is usually a laparoscopy performed with the help of an endoscope. The open operation of the gallbladder has been replaced in recent years by this treatment, as it requires less recovery time. With the removal of the gallbladder, the disease is almost completely cured. Only in a few cases, new gallstones appear.
