Are you worried about wrinkles and fine lines?

No matter what your age, if you’ve been wondering how to prevent wrinkles and minimize the signs of aging, keep reading. Listed below are some of the most effective strategies you can start trying today.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Before we dive into tips for preventing wrinkles, let’s go over what causes them in the first place. There are a few different reasons why folks develop wrinkles as they age, including the following:

Dehydration

As you get older, your skin tends to get drier and starts to produce fewer natural oils. This, in turn, makes it more fragile, less plump, and more prone to wrinkles.

Fat Loss

Aging also causes you to lose fat in the deeper layers of the skin, too. Without the fat there, the skin may start to sag and appear more wrinkled.

UV Light Exposure

Long-term UV light exposure without proper sunscreen increases oxidative damage to the cells of the body, including the skin cells.

This can cause the skin to look drier and more weathered. It may also increase your risk of developing discoloration and skin cancer.

Smoking

Smoking causes cellular damage throughout the body and to the skin. It reduces blood flow to the skin as well, which further exacerbates the aging process.

Repetitive Motion

Repetitive motions can also create wrinkles in the face. For example, if you frown or raise our eyebrows a lot, you may develop wrinkles around your forehead or eyes.

How to Prevent Wrinkles

Now that you know more about what causes wrinkles, you can start taking steps to avoid them. The following are seven effective steps you can take to keep them at bay or prevent more wrinkles from forming:

  1. Use Sunscreen

One of the best things you can do to prevent wrinkles is to protect your skin from the sun.
Make sure you apply sunscreen on a daily basis, even on days when it’s overcast or you’re not spending a lot of time outside. This helps you create a habit, and you’ll be less inclined to forget sunscreen on very sunny days.
Remember, too, that you’re still exposed to UV rays on days when it’s cloudy, so sunscreen is always a useful addition to your skincare routine.

  2. Get Your Antioxidants

As you now know, one of the primary causes of wrinkles is oxidative stress. To minimize the effects of oxidative stress (from the sun, smoking, certain foods, etc.), make sure you’re increasing your antioxidant exposure.
Use skincare products that contain antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E. These are powerful ingredients that can work wonders for your skin and leave it looking fresh, smooth, and glowy.
Eat a diet rich in antioxidants, too. This means consuming lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy fat sources like avocados, olive oil, and salmon.

  3. Use an Eye Cream

There’s a misconception that eye cream is only for older women who already have wrinkles. Remember, though, that it’s easier to prevent wrinkles and fine lines than it is to try and get rid of them.
That’s why it’s a good idea to start using eye cream when you’re young and before you have any wrinkles. This will hydrate the sensitive, thin skin under your eyes and prevent lines from forming.
If you already have wrinkles around your eyes, you can still benefit from an eye cream. Better late than never.

  4. Stay Hydrated

Your skin gets drier as you age. You can counteract this, at least to a certain extent, by making sure you’re drinking enough water. Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water every day.

Make sure you’re consuming enough electrolytes, too. You need electrolytes (sodium, potassium, etc.) to ensure water gets into your cells to hydrate them.

  5. Satin Pillow Cases

Try switching out your cotton pillow cases for satin pillow cases as well.

Satin pillow cases provide you with a smooth surface to lay your head each night. This means there will be less friction between your skin and the pillow, which reduces the risk of damage occurring throughout the night.

The skin stays smooth and doesn’t get compressed while you sleep (this also means you’ll have fewer sleep lines when you wake up in the morning!).

  6. Get Enough Sleep

It doesn’t matter that you have a satin pillow case on your bed if you aren’t getting enough sleep.

Sleep is essential for all organs of the body, including the skin, to remove waste and repair themselves. If you’re not sleeping enough, none of these other wrinkle prevention techniques will be as effective as they could be.

Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night, and try to reduce behaviors that could impact your sleep quality, such as using your phone or watching TV before bed.

  7. Get a Monthly Facial

Get a facial on a monthly basis is a great way to show your skin some love and reduce your risk of developing wrinkles.

Facials provide your skin with tons of hydration. They also help to clear out the pores and get rid of other pesky skin problems, such as acne or acne scarring.

If you can’t afford a facial on a monthly basis, try to save up and get one done on a seasonal basis instead. Four facials per year will still give your skin the TLC it needs without breaking the bank.
