The Vitamin That Cures Urinary Tract Infections : If the word “infection” makes you want to rush to the doctor for an antibiotic prescription, think twice. Not so fast, doctors and research now say. Particularly in the case of a urinary tract infection or cystitis, adding an antibiotic to your system can cause more harm than good, particularly in the areas of side effects and bacterial resistance.

The good news is: an all-natural vitamin can ease your symptoms without the damaging effects of antibiotics. How does a “vitamin” help with an infection? A vitamin is defined as a substance that our bodies need to develop and function normally. When we get a UTI, we do not have enough of a substance known as D-Mannose in our bladder to fight the bacteria that are accumulating in our bladder.

D-Mannose is a rare sugar (closely related to glucose) which is extracted from fruits such as cranberries, blueberries, peaches and apples. When consumed with water, this “superpower” vitamin functions by sending active sugar molecules into the bladder where they cause the bacteria to bind to their coating and to be flushed out with the urine. This happens quickly so the burning sensation and bladder pressure are relieved within hours.  Speed is important because, if not treated, urinary tract infections can lead to kidney damage, or even become fatal.

Studies show that there is even more promise to introducing the D-Mannose vitamin into a regular balanced diet: future UTI recurrent infections can be prevented. One scoop a day helps to develop a “protective coating” in the bladder, so that new bacteria cannot lodge there.

As the health and wellness industry continues to shift towards evidence-based, natural supplements as the first line of defense for a plethora of infections, more clinical trials are pointing towards D-Mannose as the preferred non-antibiotic preventative for women with recurring UTIs.

As noted by Dr. Jonathan Wright, graduate of Harvard University and the University of Michigan, and the Medical Director of The Tahoma Clinic, has been using D-Mannose to treat patients with urinary tract infections since the 1980s –eliminating UTIS in 85-90% of patients who were recommended this line of treatment.

Knowing as well that D-Mannose (in its vitamin form) is safe for diabetics and pregnant women, should ease any concerns that the sugar content would be harmful to either the fetus, or a person who needs to avoid certain types of glucose.

When D-Mannose passes through our systems, it passes directly into the bloodstream, and as it passes through the kidneys, a large portion of the sugar is extracted and added to the urine. This is the “magic bullet” that helps to flush out the offending bacteria.

So, join with leading health circles in thinking about vitamins as a first line of defense for UTIs.
