Having trouble falling asleep? Lately, I have been, and I blame Covid. But despite the pandemic, the show must go on. So how do you stay on top of your game, when sleep just eludes you?
Scent is a time-honoured remedy for troubled times, and in my opinion, one of the best ways to get that into your home is with an essential oil diffuser. Time to get your diffuser on. Enjoy a relaxing spa day at home with your brand new toy, your essential oil diffuser. Diffusers are one of the best methods to disperse essential oil scents around your home or in your bedroom to help you sleep.
I caught up with Ben Phillips from Australia’s oldest aromatherapy company Buckley and Phillips Aromatics and he told me that when an aroma is inhaled, the molecules enter the nose and are registered by olfactory nerve cells. These pass the information to the limbic brain. The limbic system deals with emotions, memories and stimulation. This explains why certain scents can trigger memories and influence our moods. Let’s now transfer that to better sleep.
Diffusers are just as much a decor statement as it is a self-care essential. So how do you diffuse? And what do you put in your diffuser for a great night’s sleep?
Buckley and Phillips has a Sleep Soundly blend which contains:
- Orange Sweet Valencia (Citrus sinensis) – calms nervous tension, promotes rest
- French Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – deeply relaxing, reduces stress and anxiety levels,
- Ylang Ylang Complete (Cananga odorata) – sedating and calming, reduces feelings of anxiety
- Marjoram (Origanum marjorana) – relaxing, gentle, sedative, good for relieving tension, anxiety
Other oils that are good for insomnia/restful sleep are
Chamomile-Roman, Vetiver, Rose, Clary Sage, Frankincense. So load up your diffuser and start counting sheep, till you hit the ZZZZZs.
Ben’s before bedtime tip is to mix 5 drops of these essential oils (in total) to 1 tablespoon of full fat milk, base oil, unscented body wash or Epsom salts. Then add this to running water in a hot bath before bed.
So now you’ve added to your cart, why not practice a daily meditation routine while you wait for it to arrive. My favourite is Headspace….
