Developing Your Creative Writing Skills

If you are looking for different efficient ways to develop your abilities, reading and writing will be certainly the best for you. Every day you face so many opportunities which can help you to improve your creative writing skills. Sometimes you don’t even imagine how much helpful they can be for you. I’d like to give you some useful tips which can help you to gain more abilities and skills in writing activity. The main rule which you should always keep in mind is your environment.

1. Express Your Emotions

When it comes to writing you can take an advantage of your emotions and feelings even if they are not so good. For example, when you are depressed and bad feelings overwhelm you, it’s a nice opportunity to express your mood with the help of words. Your character should have different emotions which a reader can feel and live through. That will really help you to create a true to life character.

2. Observe the Environment

It is necessary to remember that you should pay attention not only to the characters of your story and show them from different sides but also to the environment and things which surround you. For instance, when you enter the room observe carefully all the details in it. Perhaps, something there can be of great importance for you. Sometimes the furniture will tell you much about its owner. Tidiness of the flat usually shows us what kind of person lives in it. Details are enormously significant. Try your best to focus on them. Setting is an indispensable part of a good story.

3. Change Interactions

Don’t miss this up with dialogues. These things are not same. You shouldn’t be picky so much about the words your characters use. You’d better focus on their interaction. I think it’s a well-known fact that all people without exception speak and behave differently in various situations. For instance the way you communicate with friends and your teachers will differ greatly. Certainly a lot of writers make attempts to create the characters with stable behaviors and no matter what people they deal with. But if you want your characters to be more realistic make sure to change their interactions in different situations.

4. Language of Your Body

Definitely if you want to make progress in creative writing you should pay attention to your own body behavior and observe that of other people. Remember what gestures you do in different situations. Very often people may fidget while being nervous or crack their knuckles when they are bored. Almost every movement we make speaks about our certain state of mind or emotion. That’s why it is so important to learn that body language in order to succeed in writing stories. And not only movements and gestures are significant but the expressions of people’s faces. If you are attentive enough you’ll be able to guess the thoughts of people around you. When you know some peculiarities of human body behavior you can enrich your story with more original and interesting phrases than well-known clichés.

5. The Role of Senses

When you try to improve your skills in creative writing the role of senses is enormous. Don’t neglect them. Certainly, you know all the senses of our body such as smell, touch, sight, taste and sound. Keep them always in your mind while writing a story. If you want to attract more attention to your piece of writing you should involve the reader into it by all possible means. You can always rely on your senses. With their help you can depict the situation and personality perfectly. Make notes of your senses even when it concerns some simple things as eating apple or walking in the park.

6. Language Variations

Try to listen to the language of people who live in the same community with you. You will be greatly amazed at numerous variations they use. I’m sure that every language in this world is rich in various idioms and slang words. If you remember at least some of them and use in your writing, you’ll definitely manage to create a unique story. It’s almost impossible that all characters speak the same language with the same tone, people are different, with different mood and feelings. That’s why their language should also differ. In such way, you will emphasize the personality of your character.

7. Try to Be Critical

Go to the cinema or theatre and observe people there, find out their reaction to different scenes. It’s important to remember things which made the audience laugh or excited. Focus your attention on those moments during which people become bored. Your personal feelings and emotions, which you have while watching a film, are also very important. Keep in mind those episodes during which you were fascinated and amused. So when you start your writing consider all these things.

You can see that there are so many useful things which will help you to make progress in your writing skills. They surround you everywhere: at home, at work or in the street. Do you have any experience in writing? What are the main topics of your stories?
