How to create a self-care routine that actually sticks : When we are busy with life and work, self-care is the first thing to be left at the door. Because we do not perceive a measurable value to self-care, the need for it feels indulgent given the greater responsibilities of life. That’s where the misconception lies.

Self-care adds intrinsic value to your state of mind and how you operate at work and with your family. If you haven’t had much luck with a self-care routine to date, it’s time to review your self-care strategies and find some that are in line with your lifestyle so that is sticks.

Prioritize and plan it

All too easily, those important tasks and mental reminders fall through the cracks. The reason why is always the same. It was not a priority, not planned and subsequently, not achieved. Your self-care often falls prey to the same fate. Routines can fail when they don’t feel authentic, so let these rewards be a reminder of the impact and gratitude you are extending to yourself by following through with your intentions.

Keep it realistic

If you are diligently practising self-care at home, and then become a chaotic mess at work – there is no harmony in this routine. Your self-care routine should be able to translate across work and home life, making only small modifications where necessary. While you may not be able to do 60 minutes of yoga at work, you can still find a quiet place to meditate and practise stillness for 5-10 minutes. In order for your routines to add value to your life, you need to ensure that your intentions are realistic and achievable.

 

The idea of a routine shouldn’t make you roll your eyes, particularly when it’s related to your own personal wellbeing and development. Put your own spin on these practises as they will only succeed if they speak to you on a personal level. Don’t drop your bundle if you skip a day or your routine spins out temporarily, these acts are supposed to add value, not guilt you.
