New Year, New You! Alexa servodidio is a therapist and fitness instructor. Her advice here for the new year may change your perspective on achieving your 2022 goals. The bad habits of yesterday are just that, yesterday’s habits.
The only way they can impact the present is if we let them. True, habits aren’t easy to break, especially after this past year when being sedentary and relying on baking cookies as a way to pass time was the norm. But that does not mean we should beat ourselves up over it. In fact, we need to show ourselves some understanding and kindness. Our schedules were upside down. Gyms weren’t always available. 2020 was tough but we have a new opportunity in the new year. First off, I like to encourage people to find something that they love to do, after all yoga is not for everyone (even though Yoga pants look great no matter what). For example, if you are a dancing person, make it a habit to turn up the music and get moving for 20 minutes, three times a week. If you are looking for more instruction, YouTube is a great resource to find fun dance videos in any musical genre to follow. Finding something you like is key, because what we are looking for is something that we can be consistent with. If you are the kind of person who hates the intensity of kickboxing, CrossFit isn’t the way to go. Better to start with something more low impact, that won’t leave you sore and dreading the next class. Starting light and building up the intensity, along with your muscle memory, will be a recipe for a more lasting exercise regime.
I also like to remind people to listen to their bodies. If your body is saying, “Woah, too much weight,” pay attention! There is no need to lift the heaviest weights. In fact, you can achieve great results by doing less weight but increasing the repetitions of the exercise. Also, don’t forget to stretch before and after your workout. Stretching in conjunction with an ample amount of water really is the cornerstone of any workout.
Lastly, set realistic goals and realistic timeliness. Nobody can lose 30 pounds in a month, at least not in a healthy manner. Fad diets, and gimmicks are just are non-lasting. If you want to lose weight or get in shape your best bet is to create some new habits and be in it for the long haul. Like so many new moms, I’ve been struggling with shedding the baby weight, so I completely understand how frustrating this all can be. Still, I remind myself that everything worthwhile takes time, practice and patience.
