The Best Alternatives to Fixing Crooked Teeth

The Best Alternatives to Fixing Crooked Teeth : Not everyone is born with perfect teeth. Let’s face it; barely any of us match the Maybelline Tag “Maybe she’s born with it..”

The truth is quite the opposite, crooked teeth to some extent or the other is the fault of thumb sucking as a child, poor nutrition, terrible oral habits, or just plain old genetics… It is almost like the rite of passage into adulthood for most teenagers.

Some of us who still haven’t fixed our pearly whites might want to look for another alternative at this stage. Not many of us would be happy rocking our braces to work although there is no shame in that.

Below are the top 3 alternatives to the traditional metal braces that we all despise.

  1. Invisalign

With a success rate of more than 90% within an average span of 12 months, this is by far the most effective and one of the most aesthetically pleasing methods. The biggest drawback is that it is a lot of work. Firstly, it needs to be worn for at least 22 hours a day and needs to be changed every few weeks with a new aligner mold depending on your treatment. So it can start to feel like a diet you will have to stick to the duration of the treatment. But the good thing is, since the aligners are invisible, no one can really tell that you’re wearing braces. Khloe Kardashian and the likes of Justin Beiber have been rocking it without us having a clue!

In terms of pricing, the costs vary depending on the region you are in. For example, Invisalign in Dubai can range between USD 3,500 to 5,000, and in a city like New York can range anywhere from USD 3,500 to 8,000. A whopping difference of $3,000!

  2. Lingual Braces

Just like Invisalign, Lingual braces also are very aesthetically pleasing. The method uses wires and brackets but unlike regular braces, these wires are at the back of the mouth (towards the side of the tongue). So, it gives you the benefit of braces without having them on! However, the benefits are very slow to realize as this treatment takes the longest and they move the teeth a lot more gradually. Another factor to consider is the teeth cleaning process that gets a tad bit complicated because of the wires at the back.

In terms of pricing, getting lingual braces takes about the same amount of steps like getting photographs, x-rays, and molds as you would if you get Invisalign and is around the same cost if not more costing between USD 5,000 to 13,000. This is quite expensive keeping in mind that as per the American Association of Orthodontists braces generally cost between USD 5,000 to 7,000.

Another point to consider is that it is not a common procedure and in many cases, dentists may not perform this procedure.

  3. Porcelain Veneers

Although porcelain veneers are often known for the greatly demanded ‘Hollywood Smile’, this is almost cheating on this list. You see, getting porcelain veneers does not fix the problem, it merely hides orthodontic issues. Just like dumping all the clothes in the cupboard before the guests arrive; hiding the mess. So basically a veneer is a shell cover made to cover the front of the teeth. If your teeth are crooked, the application of veneers will not change the position of your teeth but it will make them appear to be straight. You can also opt for gum surgery by the dentist in Oakbrook Terrace for an overall healthier looking smile.

The most popular veneers are the porcelain veneers that give the teeth a more natural look and are stronger than the resin composite alternative. They are more durable and can last up to 15 years or more if they are well cared for. However, like mentioned before, it merely hides the problem and if you have a crossbite, overbite, or underbite that requires fixing of the issue rather than hiding it, then veneers aren’t for you.

The cost of getting veneers depends on how many teeth you want to cover. Each veneer can cost between USD 900 to 2,500. Since it is a cosmetic procedure and most often will not be covered by your insurance, it makes sense to only do the teeth in front, a set of 6 or 8 teeth which can cost up to USD 20,000 if not more.

By now, it may be evident that dentistry is serious business. But there are many alternatives out there for those of us that have delayed this for as long as possible.
