How does anxiety medicines work?

Anxiety is part of our response to survival and is the way our body reacts to potentially harmful or worrying stimuli. Powerful emotions or fear triggers a surge of epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) from our adrenal glands. This increases our breathing, increases our responsiveness to our environment, and prepares us for physical confrontation or flee if we perceive any threat to our safety, and is often called the fight or flight response. Here, we will be taking Panic Attacks as an example and how anxiety medicine help.

The major advantage that medications can have for panic attacks is to improve the patient’s confidence and facilitate progress in overcoming fear and all of its consequences. For the medicine to function in this area, at least it must help in one of the two stages of panic. The first stage is anticipatory anxiety: all the painful physical symptoms and pessimistic thoughts that escalate as you expect panic. The second stage is the panic attack symptoms. Both recent studies and clinical experience indicate that certain medicines may help to relieve symptoms for some people at either or both of these stages. However, if a medication system can specifically block the panic attack itself, many patients no longer anticipate events with such anxiety and can overcome their phobias more quickly.
