9 Unexpected Ways to Work Out Before Winter is Over
1. Wake-Up with Yoga
Get your senses and body awake with a wake-up yoga pose. The classic one is simple tuck your knees between your arms, pull them close to your chest and hold it for 8 to 10 breaths.
If that isn’t enough to get your blood flowing, there are other morning yoga exercises you can do in bed as you wake up.
What’s even great about this, is that it can become part of your morning routine. This means, you can continue enjoying its benefit even when winter is over.
2. Get family or friends together for some Sports
Instead of just getting together for dinner, how bout inviting everyone for a skii trip, hiking or snowshoeing?
Activities are a great way to get everyone involved. And it can be something as simple as a bonfire to more adventurous ones. Plus, there many other things you probably haven’t tried out together too. To name a few: trampoline jumping, ice skating and Plyometrics. All these you can do indoors or in a gym.
3. Cook up a Storm
If you aren’t up for activities how about hosting dinner instead? The kitchen will give you the warmth to work-up a good sweat. Plus, between running out to get groceries and ingredients, prepping food, and cooking, you burn a good amount of calories. That means you burn before you earn those calories over dinner. That’s better instead of letting it all pile up.
4. Get out in the cold
Did you know that that the concept for some slimming salons is to apply cold temperature to the targeted areas to burn fat? This is because your body needs to burn fat to generate heat and adjust to the temperature.
A study by Dr. Philip A. Kern and team proved the same. Their study showed that the cold temperature stimulates an increase in thermogenic genes that work against obesity and inflammation.
And if you’ve got serious belly fat to get rid of, even more good news there. That’s because it’s the tissues from thighs and belly that get converted into these fat-burning fat in the cold temperature.
So while a reliable spin bike is great for your indoor workout. You might actually get more out of a jog out in the cold.
However, do remember to keep safety first. Make sure you have the right gear and don’t force yourself out on a snow storm.
5. Get Cooler with Cold Water
Following the concept of our number 4 tip, consuming cold drinks also has a similar effect. It may not burn as much as jogging out in the cold but still helps while you’re indoors. So, don’t be in a rush to get over the shivers. That’s your body working it out while you just sit there and take it all in.
Additionally, having good water intake helps you avoid dehydration and cravings between meals.
6. Go Hit The Ice
Whether its hockey or just ice-skating with the family, you get a good burn from it. At a modest pace, you can burn up to 500 calories an hour. If you pick up the pace and get crazy with some jumps and twirls, you burn even more.
You don’t need to get too fancy with your moves, just have fun with family and friends. If you haven’t learned to skate yet, you’re sure to burn some calories learning how to.
Additionally, skating is great for toning muscles, from your core to your legs and butt. The best thing, is you can do all that while having fun.
7. Bust-A-Move
Music definitely energizes us. The best ones seem to hypnotize you into moving. You can start as early as you wake-up or maybe between chores and cooking.
So, if the weather has your jogging trail covered in inches of snow, you can still get your groove on indoors. You can opt to learn a new routine from Youtube videos or get into those home-based dance workouts online.
Simple dance moves burn a good 400 calories, if you step it up you can burn more. Moreover, you can take those dance moves to your office party.
8. Have some Karaoke Fun
That’s right, go singing. You can go to a karaoke bar or if you have one at home go hit it with the family. See, an average 150lbs person can burn 100 calories (sitting down) to 140 calories (getting your groove on).
If you love it so much then maybe sing in the shower too or while you’re doing some chores? Like cooking, the laundry, wrapping gifts and other things. All you need is a karaoke microphone to have a lot of fun. Plus, you can even get more into the holiday festive mood singing Christmas songs as you work.
Apart from the calories, you find yourself in a better mood while you sing. So it’s also a little breather as you go through any stresses over the holiday.
