Gaining a healthy weight is good for you and your baby in the pregnancy but obesity might cause you pregnancy risk, the risk of c-section and other diseases such as high blood pressure, sugar level, and fatigue. There are two types of obesity during pregnancy:
1. Obesity before pregnancy:
Many women are already overweight when they become pregnant therefore during pregnancy normal weight gain cause them more hurdles. Those women who were obese before the pregnancy face more issues including c-section births and the pressure of their body and organs also create problems for their baby. That is why the risk for mother and baby health is also high. Obesity can also cause premature births and miscarriages during pregnancy.
2. Obesity during pregnancy:
The obesity can also happen during the pregnancy when a pregnant woman gains more than usual weight during nine months. Many times this happens because of more release of growth hormones which cause a rapid weight gain. Other reason can be unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders.
How to handle obesity in pregnancy:
There are several ways to control the obesity during pregnancy which can help control the weight of pregnant women and she can even reduce some pounds as well.
The major myth here is the health of the baby. Many people think that if a pregnant woman gains more weight the more healthy the baby would be and losing weight can cause the weight loss of the baby as well but this is not completely true. Your body is designed to provide nutrients to your baby who doesn’t require fat; your body will store those fats and supply the nutrients to your baby. Therefore if you lose or control your weight smartly your baby will not suffer but eating healthy is key.
1. Eat healthily:
Losing weight doesn’t mean that you should stop eating. Eat wisely and select that food in your diet which is good in nutrient value and provides you all the minerals, vitamin, calcium, fiber and other nutrients which are necessary for the baby and you. Manage your diet according to low calorie and more nutrient food which will help you control your weight and prevents it from increasing day by day. The healthy food includes fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts, proteins, milk and yogurt and fish. All this will help you and your baby to stay healthy and strong. Take supplements after consulting your doctor if you have any deficiency.
2. Stay active:
Staying active during pregnancy is as important as many other things, this will not only help you manage your weight but also helps you to gain extra pounds. The active pregnant women stay healthy and able to deliver baby normally. But remember don’t over stress yourself and take rest whenever required but pregnancy is not meant to be spent taking bed rest while you don’t have any complications.

3. Mild exercise:
Consult your doctor about it and ask those exercises which you can do at home. Yoga is very good in pregnancy but makes sure you have an expert guidance; you can take a good walk, do some light exercises and even enjoy swimming. Make sure not to overdo anything and consult your doctor before who will guide you according to your time of pregnancy and your health issues.
4. Make weight target and manage your weight:
It is better to make your weight target and stick to it rather than keeping piling extra weight throughout the pregnancy. Your extra weight will be difficult to reduce after delivery and if you start managing it today it will be easier for you to lose it afterward. Your weight management will also help you deliver a healthy baby and able to deliver normally, reducing the risk of c-section. Make a target for yourself and manage your weight according to it.
