How to keep unpleasant side of Monsoons at bay : Monsoon is probably one of the most awaited seasons in India. While some wait for it so that it brings them relief from the scorching heat, others wait for it to add spice to their love life. But am not going to talk about any of it (a lot has already been written on that). Here, I’ll discussing about the unpleasant side of the pleasant weather days.
During the rainy season you also frequently get to hear about cases of diseases like malaria, dengue, typhoid, jaundice, viral fever, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, and diarrhea. Some of the common symptoms of these monsoon maladies are infections, indigestion problems, fever common cold and cough.
Most of the monsoon ailments are waterborne, and can easily be prevented by taking a few precautions. Here a few tips that can help you keep common monsoon diseases at bay:
- You might not feel as thirsty during the monsoon as you do in summer, but it’s important for you to stay hydrated so that your body is able to flush out all the toxins that could make you sick. Consume 2-3 litres of water daily. Make sure you boil the water before consuming it.
- Since infections prevalent during monsoon are contagious, it’s best to avoid going to public places as you might catch infections from the already infected people over there.
- Always wash your hands with soap before eating. In case you don’t have access to clean water and soap, use a sanitizer.
- Consume only home-cooked meals. Avoid outside food, especially street food which is prepared in unhygienic surroundings. Intake of contaminated food can cause diseases like diarrhoea and jaundice.
- Use a powerful mosquito repellent to keep mosquitoes away.
Your diet plays a crucial role in determining how prone you’ll be diseases during the monsoon. Consuming a healthy and well-balanced diet is important to stay healthy during the monsoons. Here are a few dietary do’s and don’ts that you must practice during the monsoon.
Do’s
Increase the intake of Vitamin C as it is known to fight infections. Include vitamin C rich foods like oranges, bell peppers, lemons, spinach, and broccoli in your diet.
Boost your immunity by adding garlic to your meals.
Consume herbal teas at regular intervals as they have anti-bacterial properties. Teas like ginger tea, jasmine tea, chamomile tea, and green tea are healthy as they build up your resistance to fight against infections.
Don’ts
I agree that it’s hard to not bite into hot and crispy pakodas when it’s pouring outside, but chomping on oily pakoras can make you feel lethargic and put on unwanted kilos. Snack on stir-fried vegetables, sweet corn chat, and soups.
Avoid meat.
The monsoon is season for bacteria to breed, due to which meat gets contaminated easily. Consuming contaminated meat could lead to stomach infections.
Limit the consumption
Limit the consumption of tea, alcohol, and coffee as they can dehydrate you.
Monsoon woes don’t only stop at diseases. Our skin and hair suffer as much as our health. Fungal infection, rashes, pimples, dandruff, hair lice; maintaining your ‘on fleek’ look is hard during the monsoon. However, by maintaining proper hygiene a lot of these allergies can be prevented.
- If you get drenched in rain, take a bath immediately as rainwater (especially in metropolitan cities) contains chemicals and acids which are harmful to the skin and can cause allergies and infections.
- Moisture is one of the main causes of monsoon infections. Try to keep your skin and hair clean and moisture free.
- Take a bath daily and use anti-bacterial soaps and shampoos.
You can only enjoy this beautiful season if you’re healthy. So inculcate the above tips in your lifestyle and cherish the sound pitter-patter till it lasts.
